Residents' Association
The Island is a patchwork of responsibilities but in general the Residents'
Association has been formed to ensure that certain aspects, such as the ecology
and play areas, the central piazza, canal arm and basin and the central Public
Open Space area, which runs from the bus stop at Brunswick Road along Manton
Road up to the ecology area by George Lovell Drive, are all maintained to a high
standard for the benefit of residents.
Some of its other responsibilities involve maintaining:
- Those areas of the Island which are not the responsibility of the flat
management companies, housing associations or the London Borough of Enfield.
- The water tower and two small bridges leading off the Island, one towards
Rifles Public House and the other to Government Row.
- Parts of the sewage system which pumps waste water and effluent off the
Island where it joins the main drainage system in Enfield Lock. There a number
of pumps working 24 hours a day doing this and when solid objects and oil/fat
are washed down the toilets and sinks then we have to call in the "emergency
unblockers".
- Certain areas of the riverbanks.
- The integrity of the clay cap which acts as a barrier between residents
and any possible contaminates in the ground.
- A Community Centre facility for residents.
